You can get free gardening eBooks to read on your eReader, smartphone, or tablet device from websites that provide eBook files in the public domain. These are usually older books but they can still be great books for expanding your knowledge of plants and gardening. One of the websites you can find free books on is Project Gutenberg, a free eBook library of over 60,000 books with expired US copyrights. I listed some that I found within Project Gutenberg here:

Manual of Gardening (Second Edition) by L. H. Bailey

Who is L. H Bailey?

Liberty Hyde Bailey (1858-1954) was a successful American botanist, horticulturist, author and co-founder of the American Society for Horticultural Science. He is considered to be the father of rural sociology and rural journalism. Born in Michigan, he was raised on a farm, educated and taught at the Michigan Agricultural College and became Professor of Horticulture at Cornell University where he later became Dean and Director. He wrote scores of books, including scientific works, efforts to explain botany to laypeople, and a collection of poetry. He received numerous medals from national and foreign societies and was a member of domestic and foreign scientific, botanical, and horticultural societies. He was voted one of the three outstanding living horticulturists several years prior to his death.

The Internet Archive is an American digital library with the stated mission of “universal access to all knowledge.” It provides free public access to collections of digitized materials, including websites, software applications/games, music, movies/videos, moving images, and millions of public-domain books. In addition to its archiving function, the Archive is an activist organization, advocating for a free and open Internet.
